Sport is the one kind of live event where the same seat can cost five times as much in one city as another on the same night, and where the reason is rarely the quality of the sport. It is the size of the building, how many home dates the club has to sell, and who happens to be visiting.

That last point is the one most people miss. In the long-season sports -- baseball, basketball, hockey -- the visiting team moves the price more than the home team does, so the cheapest way to see a club at home is usually a midweek fixture against an opponent nobody has travelled to watch. In the short-season sports, above all football, there is no cheap fixture in the same sense: with only a handful of home dates a year, scarcity sets a floor that no midweek discount can get under.

The other thing worth knowing is that a ticket's price and a ticket's value are different questions. A lower-bowl seat at the halfway line is priced on sightline, and in a sport where the play moves fast that premium is real. In a sport where it does not, the upper deck at a third of the price is often the better trade.
