Madison Square Garden is built directly on top of Penn Station, occupying the block between Seventh and Eighth Avenues from 31st to 33rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. That single fact settles almost every question about where to stay: fourteen subway lines stop within two blocks of the doors, the Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit both terminate in the building, Amtrak calls there on its way up and down the Northeast Corridor, and the arena has no public car park of its own. You are not really choosing a hotel by distance from the venue here. You are choosing which part of New York you want to spend the rest of your time in, and then taking a train to the show.

Where you stay matters more than usual here, so these are the realistic bases and what each one trades away.
Penn Station, Herald Square and Koreatown (the immediate blocks)
The densest cluster of rooms anywhere near the arena, much of it within a five- to ten-minute walk of the doors. It is also the least appealing stretch of Midtown at street level: a long-running construction zone around the station, heavy foot traffic, chain retail and very little that feels like a neighbourhood. The redeeming feature is Koreatown, on West 32nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, two blocks east and genuinely good. Choose this if the event is the whole trip and you want to walk out of the lobby and be there.
Best for Walking to the doors in under ten minutes
Midtown West and the Theater District
North of the Garden around Times Square and the Broadway houses, roughly a fifteen-minute walk or one stop on the subway. Enormous room supply, and the obvious base if the trip also takes in a show. The trade-off is the familiar one: tourist pricing, dense crowds and a part of Manhattan most New Yorkers go out of their way to avoid.
Best for Combining the event with Broadway
Chelsea, NoMad and the Flatiron
South and south-east of the arena, ten to twenty minutes on foot. This is where the food and the street life improve markedly and the blocks start to feel like somewhere people actually live. There are fewer very large hotels than in Midtown proper, and you will either walk a bit further or take a short subway ride, but it is the choice that most improves the hours either side of the event.
Best for Eating well and a real neighbourhood
Hell's Kitchen and Hudson Yards
West and north-west of the arena. Hell's Kitchen, along Ninth and Tenth Avenues, is one of the better restaurant corridors in Manhattan and an easy walk in. Hudson Yards, at the far west end of 34th Street, is about fifteen minutes on foot, with the northern end of the High Line and the 7 train terminus at its feet; it is newer and quieter, and also glassy and rather lifeless at street level once the offices empty.
Best for Food, or a quieter base still within walking distance
Across the river and across the bridges: Jersey City, Hoboken, Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn
Usually the cheapest rooms of any of these, at the cost of committing to a train in each direction. Jersey City and Hoboken have the neatest connection of the lot, since PATH trains run to 33rd Street, one block east of the Garden. Long Island City and Downtown Brooklyn are a handful of subway stops away. All are straightforward on the way in; the thing worth checking is the late-night service pattern on your particular line for the way back.
Best for Lower nightly rates
Best area without a car
Effectively all of them, which is unusual enough to be worth saying plainly. This is the rare major venue where the honest advice is not to bring a car at all. With fourteen subway lines stopping at Penn Station or Herald Square within two blocks of the doors, most of Manhattan below about 96th Street, plus a good deal of Brooklyn, Queens and the Hudson waterfront, sits within half an hour of the arena. If you want no transit whatsoever, stay in the Herald Square blocks and walk.

Getting to Madison Square Garden
Parking
The Garden has no public car park of its own. Parking means a commercial garage in the surrounding blocks at Midtown event rates, and it is worth reserving through a parking app in advance rather than arriving and hunting for a space. A congestion charge also applies to vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street, which includes the Garden, so check the current rate before setting off. Street parking is not a plan. Of every venue in this guide, this is the one where driving is most clearly the wrong answer.
Public transportation
About as good as it gets in North America. 34 St-Penn Station sits directly beneath the arena: the 1, 2 and 3 on the Seventh Avenue side, and the A, C and E on the Eighth Avenue side. 34 St-Herald Square is one block east and adds the B, D, F, M, N, Q, R and W. PATH trains from Hoboken and Journal Square surface at 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue, one block east. The Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit both run into Penn Station itself, while Amtrak boards from Moynihan Train Hall, across Eighth Avenue in the old Farley building, which also has escalators down to several of the Long Island Rail Road platforms. Several Midtown bus routes pass the doors as well.
Uber, Lyft and taxis
Uber and Lyft both operate, but they are usually the slowest way to arrive and the slowest way to leave. The arena empties into Midtown traffic on a block with very little usable kerbside, and surge pricing after a sellout is steep. Walking a few blocks clear of the Garden before requesting a car is the standard workaround. For almost any trip within the city, the subway underneath the building will beat a car comfortably.
Restaurants nearby
Koreatown is the short answer: West 32nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, signposted as Korea Way, two blocks east of the Garden and stacked several storeys deep with Korean restaurants, bakeries and late-opening bars. It is by some distance the best eating within five minutes of the doors. The blocks immediately around Penn Station are otherwise chains and quick-service. For a proper sit-down meal, walk north-west into Hell's Kitchen along Ninth Avenue, or south into Chelsea and the Flatiron; both are inside fifteen minutes on foot and both are considerably better.
Things to do nearby
Macy's Herald Square is one block north-east, and the Empire State Building is about a seven-minute walk east at 34th and Fifth. Times Square, Bryant Park and the New York Public Library are ten to fifteen minutes north. Walking west along 34th Street brings you to Hudson Yards and the northern end of the High Line in roughly fifteen minutes. Madison Square Park and the Flatiron Building are a similar walk south. Do I need a car for an event at Madison Square Garden?
Realistically, no, and a car is an active liability. There is no public car park at the arena, Midtown garage rates are high, a congestion charge applies to vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street, and traffic around the block before and after an event is grim. Unless you are driving in from somewhere with no rail service at all, leave the car behind.
Which airport is best for Madison Square Garden?
Newark (EWR) in principle, because NJ Transit runs directly into Penn Station beneath the arena, but Newark's terminal AirTrain is being replaced and is subject to closures and shuttle-bus substitution, so check before planning around it. JFK is reliable via the AirTrain to Jamaica and then the LIRR into Penn Station, around 45 minutes to an hour. LaGuardia is the closest by road but has no train at all.

Busy, crowded and unlovely. It is a working transport hub in the middle of a long-running reconstruction, and the streets immediately outside are not where anyone chooses to spend an evening. It is perfectly fine to walk through at event hours, and Koreatown two blocks east is genuinely good, but if you want somewhere pleasant either side of the show, book a few blocks further out in Chelsea, the Flatiron or Hell's Kitchen and walk in.
Can you walk from hotels to Madison Square Garden?
Yes, easily, and unusually from hundreds of them. The Garden sits in the middle of Midtown Manhattan, and anywhere roughly between 23rd Street and 42nd Street, from the Hudson across to Fifth Avenue, is a comfortable walk. This is the opposite of a suburban stadium.
