Wrigleyville and Lakeview (walking distance)
The blocks around Clark, Addison and Sheffield put you five minutes from the gate on foot, with Clark Street's bars and the Gallagher Way plaza on the doorstep. Hotel supply is genuinely small, because the ballpark is surrounded by three-flats and houses rather than hotels, so rooms are scarce and priced accordingly on a good weekend. Clark Street is also loud well past midnight after a night game, which is either the point of staying here or a reason not to.
Best for Walking to the gate and staying out afterwards
Lincoln Park and Old Town
Two to three miles south of the ballpark, served by the same Red Line plus the Brown Line, so the trip in is ten to fifteen minutes on a train. Quieter and more residential than Wrigleyville, with a strong run of restaurants around Halsted, Armitage and Clark, Lincoln Park Zoo and the lakefront close by. A sensible compromise if you want the neighborhood feel without sleeping above a sports bar.

River North, Streeterville and the Loop
Downtown holds the overwhelming majority of Chicago's hotel rooms, roughly five miles south of Wrigley. The State Street subway runs straight to Addison in about twenty minutes with no transfer, which is why so many visitors stay here and commute to the game. The trade-off is that you give up the pre-game neighborhood entirely and commit to a train ride each way, which after a sellout means a packed platform.

Uptown and Andersonville
Roughly half a mile to two miles north along the same Red Line, with stops at Sheridan, Wilson, Lawrence and Berwyn. Usually cheaper than downtown or Wrigleyville, and Andersonville's stretch of Clark Street is one of the better eating strips on the North Side, while Uptown has the Green Mill, the Aragon and the Riviera. Be honest with yourself about supply, though: these are residential areas with a handful of mostly independent properties, not a hotel district.

Best area without a car
Anywhere on the Red Line, and that is not a dodge -- it is the actual answer. Wrigleyville first if you can get a room, downtown second, because the State Street subway reaches Addison in one ride at any hour. Chicago is one of the few American cities where a car is a liability for a ballgame rather than a necessity, and the walk from the Addison platform to your seat takes about as long as finding your car would.

Getting to Wrigley Field
Parking
There is no general public car park attached to the ballpark. The Cubs run their own lots a few blocks north of the park, around Grace Street, Eddy Street and Irving Park Road, but on event days those are for season parking holders rather than walk-up visitors, and all the club's lots are cashless. What is actually available to a visitor is the various private lots, garages and driveways in the neighborhood, which sell spaces on game day. The team also runs a free remote park-and-ride with a shuttle bus for night and weekend games; the lot has changed location more than once, so check the Cubs site for the current address rather than an old blog post. Book something in advance -- arriving and looking is not a plan here.
Public transportation
This is the good news. This is the good news. The CTA Red Line stops at Addison, about half a block east of the ballpark at Addison and Sheffield, and runs 24 hours a day, which makes it the obvious approach from almost anywhere in the city. The Brown Line's Southport station is about half a mile southwest and is a useful escape when the Addison platform is crushed after the last out. Buses 22 (Clark) and 152 (Addison) both stop at Clark and Addison. There is no Metra station at the ballpark: the Union Pacific North line passes nearby without stopping, so suburban riders come into the city or the North Shore and transfer onto the Red Line.
Uber, Lyft and taxis
Uber and Lyft both operate and work well enough on the way in. Afterwards, Clark and Addison seize up completely, and requesting a car from outside the gates means surge pricing and a long wait in a crowd. Walking five or ten minutes clear of the park first -- south towards Belmont, or west past Racine -- is usually faster than waiting where everyone else is waiting.
Restaurants nearby
Clark Street either side of the ballpark is wall-to-wall sports bars, and a few are institutions rather than tourist traps: the Cubby Bear has been on the corner at Clark and Addison since the 1950s, and Murphy's Bleachers sits beneath the rooftops at Sheffield and Waveland on the site of a bar that goes back decades further. For food rather than beer, walk ten minutes west to the Southport Corridor or a few blocks south to Belmont, both of which offer considerably more range. Deep-dish pizza and Italian beef are city-wide institutions and there is no reason to eat either within sight of the ballpark.
Things to do nearby
Gallagher Way, the open plaza on the west side of the ballpark, runs events through the year and opens to ticket holders around game time. Wrigley Field itself runs guided tours that take in the seating bowl, press box, visiting clubhouse and dugout. A few blocks west on Southport, the Music Box Theatre is a restored 1929 cinema still showing repertory and independent films, and the Metro on Clark has been one of the city's principal rock venues since the early 1980s. Lake Michigan and the Lakefront Trail are under a mile east, Lincoln Park Zoo is about two miles south and free to enter, and Millennium Park and the Art Institute are a straight Red Line ride away downtown. Can you walk to Wrigley Field from hotels?
Yes -- this is one of the few American ballparks where that is genuinely possible, and if you land a room in Wrigleyville the walk is about five minutes. The catch is volume: the ballpark is ringed by houses and flats, not hotels, so there are far fewer rooms than demand on a summer weekend. Most visitors stay elsewhere and take the Red Line, which is nearly as easy.
Is it better to stay in Wrigleyville or downtown Chicago?
Wrigleyville if the game and the neighborhood around it are the trip: you walk to the gate, you drink where the crowd drinks, and you never touch a train. Downtown if you are in Chicago for a weekend with a game in it: far more rooms, far more to do, and a twenty-minute ride to Addison with no transfer. Neither is a mistake, but Wrigleyville is loud at night and downtown is not.
Is there parking at Wrigley Field?
Not in the way most modern stadiums have parking. Can I park on the street near Wrigley Field?
Realistically, no. The residential streets around the ballpark are permit zones -- a year-round Lakeview zone with an event-activated overlay on top of it for Cubs games -- and cars without the correct permit in the tow area are towed rather than simply ticketed, starting in the early evening on game days. Do not plan on circling until something opens up.
