The Meadowlands (East Rutherford, Carlstadt and Rutherford)
A cluster of chain hotels sits in the industrial belt immediately around the sports complex, roughly one to three miles from the stadium along Route 17, Route 120 and Paterson Plank Road. These are the closest bookable rooms by distance and usually the cheapest way to be near the venue. Be clear about what the area is, though: warehouses, office parks and motorway ramps, with almost nothing to walk to and no evening of its own. Some properties lay on event shuttles, but it is not a standard amenity and it varies by event, so confirm before booking on that basis.

Secaucus
Secaucus Junction is where every train to the stadium begins, which makes the town the sharpest logistical choice on paper. In practice the hotel cluster is around Harmon Meadow, roughly two miles from the station and not a walk most people would enjoy, so you still need a short drive, a taxi or a hotel shuttle to reach the platform. The compensation is that there is a large paid car park at the junction itself, so you can drive there, leave the car and take the shuttle train in rather than sitting in the stadium car parks afterwards.

Hoboken and Jersey City
The two genuinely urban bases on the New Jersey side: dense, walkable, full of restaurants and bars, and linked to Manhattan by PATH trains under the Hudson. Hoboken Terminal has direct NJ Transit trains to Secaucus Junction in about ten minutes; from Jersey City you connect through Hoboken or Newark Penn Station. This is the best compromise if you want a real neighbourhood in the evening without paying Manhattan rates for it.

Midtown Manhattan
If this is a New York trip with an event attached, stay in New York. The most practical corner of Midtown for this venue is the area around Penn Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal: Penn Station to Secaucus Junction is a train ride of roughly ten to fifteen minutes, and the Coach USA 351 Meadowlands Express runs direct from Port Authority to the stadium for NFL games and other large events. You pay Manhattan prices and you are furthest from the stadium in miles, but you are closest to everything else you came for.
Best for People who want New York, not New Jersey
Newark Airport area
The hotel belt around Newark Liberty is usually the cheapest of these options and sits on the Northeast Corridor, which runs through Secaucus Junction, so the stadium is reachable by train with the same single change as everywhere else. It is a functional base rather than a pleasant one — airport hotels with nothing walkable around them — and it makes sense chiefly on a fly-in, fly-out trip.

Best area without a car
Midtown Manhattan near Penn Station, or Hoboken. Both put you on a train that reaches Secaucus Junction in ten to fifteen minutes, and both give you somewhere worth walking around before and after. Getting to MetLife Stadium
Parking
Parking for Giants and Jets games is by prepaid permit only, sold in advance and tiered by lot, with the closest lots the most expensive. Lots open several hours before kickoff and tailgating is permitted in most of them, but the permit buys a single space for both the car and the tailgate set-up — adjacent spaces cannot be used for grills, chairs or tents. If you turn up without a permit there is a paid off-site lot on Murray Hill Parkway in East Rutherford with a shuttle into the complex, and you can also leave the car in the large paid car park at Secaucus Junction and ride the train in. Concerts and non-NFL events set their own parking rules, so check the specific event rather than assuming the football arrangements apply.
Public transportation
There is a station at the stadium, but the Meadowlands line is event-only and never direct. NJ Transit runs a shuttle from Secaucus Junction to the stadium, a ride of about ten minutes, and effectively the whole regional network — trains from New York Penn Station, Newark, Hoboken and most New Jersey lines — connects there. The caveat that matters: NJ Transit runs the service for events expected to draw more than about 50,000 people, so a sold-out NFL game or a stadium concert will have trains and a smaller event may have none at all. Check before you plan around it. Buses are sometimes substituted for the shuttle trains on the same corridor. Separately, Coach USA's 351 Meadowlands Express runs direct from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan to the stadium for NFL games and other large events, starting about two and a half to three hours beforehand and running for about an hour after the final whistle.
Uber, Lyft and taxis
Uber and Lyft both operate, and drop-off and pick-up are in different places: cars set down on the road between Lots D and E, while the pick-up zone afterwards is in Lot E by the Verizon Gate. Surge pricing after a full stadium is severe and waits of well over half an hour are normal. This is the single best argument for taking the train.
Restaurants nearby
There is no restaurant district around the stadium. The immediate surroundings are warehouses, office parks and motorway, and the nearby hotels are served mostly by chains. The practical exception is American Dream, the vast shopping and entertainment complex next door in the same sports complex, which has a large food hall and a run of sit-down restaurants and is connected to the stadium by a pedestrian bridge. For anything better, the eating is elsewhere: Hoboken, where Washington Street is lined with restaurants and Carlo's Bakery has been trading since 1910; Jersey City around Newark Avenue; or across the river in Manhattan. The small boroughs nearest the stadium, Rutherford and Lyndhurst, have modest walkable main streets, but they are neighbourhood places rather than a destination.
Things to do nearby
American Dream stands in the same complex as the stadium, linked by a pedestrian bridge, and is the main draw in the immediate area: an indoor theme park, an indoor water park, a year-round indoor ski slope, an aquarium and a great deal of retail, all under one roof. The Meadowlands Racetrack, also in the complex, has run harness racing since 1976. Beyond that, the attraction is New York itself, about five miles east. On the New Jersey side, Liberty State Park in Jersey City is the departure point for the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and the Hoboken waterfront gives you the best free view of the Manhattan skyline anywhere.
